In the early evening of January 5th, we arrived in Jerusalem. It was raining and obviously still Shabbat, all streets empty. After checking into our hostel, we walked around and watched the city slowly waking up. Finally dinner in an Israeli restaurant - kosher of course. There was a group of young Jewish Americans, spending their last evening in the Holy Land. There are so many religious travel groups, be it Jews or Christians, and they all seem a bit strange. Maybe they have already found the enlightenment we still lack. The view from our room onto Zion Square at night: young Orthodox Jews singing songs and drinking.
Today a visit to the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rocks, at least from outside, later to the Mount of Olives. The view over the Jewish cemetery onto the city is fascinating.
The weather is grey, as is our mood as we are ripped of at the bazaar after lunch. Fifty euro for falafel is a little too much but it's difficult to argue if you had problems converting shekels to euro first... Maybe we shouldn't have asked the owner about the picture on the wall - turned out it was his brother, shot by the Israeli military.
Tomorrow, we are off to Amman.
